LOT DIRECTORY 2011
FOREWORD
Hello again…
Finally, we can take the bottle of bubbly that we have been
saving in the vinotèque for 18 years and raise a glass and
propose a toast as the Whole Lot Directory comes of age.
To Candace and her dedicated crew, Warren, Meaghan and
Veronica. Congratulations on a job well done. To Roman, a
big thank you for your friendship and support. The Whole
Lot continues to offer an excellent service to the industry
and remains an integral marketing asset to any company
in Africa. The company remains focussed; our systems are
robust and stable, as we constantly strive to deliver
information that is relevant and accurate. Our growth
prospects going forward are exciting as we look to increase
our leverage into the media and entertainment markets.
2011 will see us roll out and implement our online
interactive database to serve as a valuable and immediate
resource to the industry.
To South Africa and all those involved in the 2010 World Cup™, we salute you on a well-executed
plan. More than 309 000 tourists travelled to SA in June/July for the World Cup, spending R3.6
billion. Unfortunately the industry did not see the spike we expected as most global events are
orchestrated by international companies who fly-in all the logistical infrastructure. I do believe
we learnt and gleaned a great deal of knowledge from the visitors where our equipment was used.
Congratulations to Kim Geldenhuys and Ogilvy Johannesburg for "Selinah", an honest and emotive
look at the true effect of HIV through the lens. It won gold in the TV & Cinema Commercial
category at the Cannes Lions Advertising festival. It is also the first SA commercial to win the
Grand London International Award. Congratulations also goes to Velocity, who came out top at
the Loeries Awards, scooping the Grand Prix, three golds, a silver and four bronze "birds".
International long-form features and syndicated productions continue to grace our shores. The
Department of Trade & Industry has increased the rebate cap of foreign co-productions that meet
the necessary requirements. This is a great incentive to attract bigger co-productions into the
service sector. To remain internationally competitive with our strong currency, we must still
continue to grow our offering and work in sync as a cohesive unit, in order to maintain our
advantage.
The first phase of the Cape Town Film Studios has now been completed. These state of the art
studios allow Cape Town to offer, not only location driven destinations but also world-class studios.
The first international production has already moved in and is busy with pre-production on a
major 3D-feature.
The Whole Lot has again made it a priority with this publication to continue our commitment to
our green focus. This publication has been printed on Sappi Triple Green Paper as we continue
to reduce our company's carbon footprint. We are once again honoured to have the Cape Town,
Gauteng and Durban Film Commissions on our cover. Proudly South Africa™ is displayed on the
spine as we promote all that is South Africa.
The Whole Lot is accepted and recognised as a global brand.
Thank you to all our advertisers, we trust that you are enjoying
the continued benefits of advertising with the directory.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2010
Congratulations to Candace and her specialised crew
for their determined focus and passion in creating this 17th edition
of The Whole Directory.
This year will see the launch of our interactive
website www.wholelot.co.za, which will create a valuable immediate
resource to compliment the hard copy directory and keep our subscribers
and advertisers engaged and informed about all that is current in
our industry
The Whole Lot has once again made it a priority with
this publication to continue our commitment to our green focus.
The Directory has been printed on Sappi Triple Green Paper consisting
of 60% sugar-cane fibre that is chlorine-free and supports sustainable
afforestation. This is our continued proactive green contribution
to the environment and will help to reduce our company’s carbon
footprint.
Our industry will no doubt feel the effect of the
current financial meltdown, however our fluctuating Rand will continue
to offer value to foreign producers shooting in South Africa. Cape
Town has already had a number of commercials that were filmed in
and around the city. We are proud to have the Cape Town, Gauteng
and Durban Film Commissions once again on our cover. This shows
the cooperation and support that the film industry enjoys to successfully
orchestrate shoots in anyone of our film-friendly cities.
Our first CGI Animated feature film has just been
completed and is due for release later this year. Film has taken
on another exciting facet with the emergence of a group of independent
guerilla filmmakers that have embraced cheaper picture capture,
hybrid and digital solutions that can translate into improved productivity
and quicker image accessibility. We need writers and directors to
anticipate this new and diverse audience and create compelling and
powerful content that will make a good model for distribution.
2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer is without a doubt the
biggest international sporting event ever to be hosted in South
Africa. The Whole Lot will be printing a special media directory
to help facilitate the enormous number of foreign media and television
crews that will be visiting our shores. The directory will include
technical and logistical support from each match venue, as well
as enable producers to draw from a pool of professional actors,
performers and crew from a diverse ethnic and multicultural background.
We as a country are now in pre-production phase as we prepare for
the FIFA Confederations Cup that kicks off in June/July of 2009.
This will be a good measure of our industry status for 2010.
The Whole Lot has now been accepted and recognised
as a global brand. Thank you to all our advertisers, we trust that
you are enjoying the continued benefits of advertising with the
directory.
The Whole Lot will continue to embrace all aspects of our growing
media industry with confidence, ready to face the exciting challenges
that lie ahead.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2008
Hello
Again.....
This year we
celebrate 15 years of successfully publishing the annual Whole Lot
Directory. Congratulations to Candace and her dedicated crew for
this 15th edition.
This year
sees the directory returning to a stylish hardcover design as requested
by the industry and our subscribers. A key critical issue for this
publication was our green focus.
This brought about a close working relationship with our printers
to source an environmentally friendly paper that would not compromise
the integrity of our print
quality. This resulted in using the Sappi Triple Green Paper consisting
of 60% sugar-cane fibre that is chlorine-free and supports sustainable
afforestation. This is our proactive green contribution to the environment
and will help to reduce our company’s carbon footprint.
We are proud
to have the Cape Town, Gauteng and Durban Film Commissions on our
cover this year. This shows the cooperation and support that the
film industry enjoys to successfully orchestrate shoots in anyone
of our film-friendly cities.
In September
of last year, the Independent Communications Authority of SA awarded
four new broadcast licenses. This was a bold move that will bring
about a new and exciting era in local broadcast, resulting in a
migration from analogue to digital broadband as well as an internet
protocol television service. This platform should be ready for rollout
by the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This will see an intensive capital investment
programme into the industry, as well as a slate of product commissions
for content providers.
Congratulations
must go to Moonlighting Film Production Services for winning the
ABSA/ Cape Town Regional Chamber of Commerce Award for Exporter
of the Year, this was done by beating off stiff competition from
exporters both large and small. On the digital post-production front,
congratulations must also go to Condor Cape for securing its first
international feature visual effects film contract. This proves
that our country is a film destination of unparalleled crew, talent
and service.
The Whole Lot
has now been accepted and recognised as a global brand and we trust
that you are enjoying the benefits of advertising with the directory.
Thank you to all our
advertisers for your continued support.
The Whole Lot
will continue to embrace all aspects of our growing media industry
and we are considered “The producers first choice!”.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2007
Welcome
to our 2007 edition of the Whole Lot directory.
Congratulations to Candace and her crew, on this our 14th edition.
This year, in keeping with international trends in Production and
Post Production, we have introduced icons, indicating the type of
services each company specialises in. These are at-a-glance easy
keys to explain what the icons denote.
The
Whole Lot has been accepted and recognized as a global brand and
we trust that you are enjoying the continued benefits of advertising
with the directory. Market research shows a 40% increase in filming
activity across all sectors. One of the main contributors is the
dip in the rand, which has seen a large portion of the Latin American
bound shoots returning to shoot in our spectacular locations. This
in turn has a positive advantage to all sectors within the infrastructure
of our industry.
2006
saw The Whole Lot Directory attending the 53rd International Advertising
Festival
in Cannes. “South Africa Exposed” promoted the industry
under one banner, showing that we are a co-operative force to be
reckoned with and that we have the support of the authorities to
successfully orchestrate shoots in our cities. We were proud to
have
the Cape Town, Gauteng and Durban film commissions all being represented
at the market.
We cannot continue to rely on being a location driven destination
if we are to compete
in an international filming arena. I look forward to “Dreamworld”
and the planned film studios in Durban coming on stream, this should
be sufficient for our industry
requirements in the foreseeable future.
It is fantastic to see South African Films receive such high acclaim
at the most prestigious film festivals around the world, celebrating
our talent and creativity. As we continue to encourage quality and
excellence in developing new talent.
The
Whole Lot will continue to embrace all aspects of our growing media
industry and
we are considered “The producers first choice!”.
To all our advertisers and subscribers, thank you for your continued
support.
To all our advertisers and subscribers, thank you for your continued
support.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2006
Hello
again
The
primary focus of our efforts has always been to deliver an accurate
up to date and stylish directory. This year our annual 13th edition
has surpassed itself. I would like to thank Candace and the dedicated
efforts of her specialised crew, for a job well done! To all our
advertisers and subscribers, thank you for your continuos support
we have received from all of you, and for making this the premier
directory for southern Africa.
As
digital broadband and other new technologies turn the media and
entertainment world inside out, south Africa continues to generate
approximately R1.5 billion in quantitative production film value
annually, a figure that will definitely increase as executives and
production partnerships make use of tax breaks, international co-production
treaties, distribution and exhibition deals, plus the many organizations
that now offer an easier synergy for financing.
Film, TV and commercial productions have always been a consistent
industry in our country. After 1994 it was foreign commercials that
were big growth focus. Commercials have shifted and we have seen
a growth in episodic TV and features. I believe this sector will
grow as the industry shifts and we are nowhere near the caps of
our countries potential.
If
we rewind the last couple of years we can look back on a burgeoning
slate of hoe-grown films that have all developed into award winning
celluiod- "yesterday", "U-Carmen ekhayelitsha," "Zulu love letters",
but to name a few. Congratulations to all the ambitiousin dependent
visionaries for their perseverance. We now have a great advantage
with a reservoir of talent to draw upon, both in front and behind
the camera, this will only continue with training and training initiatives.
Liaison
amongst governmental agencies must continue and improve, to make
legislation and administration easier at regional film office levels,
to keep our provinces film and budget friendly. The entertainment
industry has the potential to be the highest multipliers of additional
spend back into our economy.
I
encourage you to cast South Africa in your next production, and
experience first hand our countries unparalleled locations, talent,
crews, service and incentives.
Thank
you for your continued support.
Barry
Lucas
WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2005
The
whole lot is celebrating its twelfth year of publication, clearly
establishing itself as a premier directory for southern Africa.
Candace and I would like to thank each and every one of you, our
advertisers, for making this edition the most comprehensive yet.
2004
has marked the start of a relationship between the industry and
government, who have identified the importance of the film industry
in generating employment, income and investment opportunities. This
recognition has highlighted the necessity for diversification and
progress as we redress the imbalances of the past, in order to continue
our industry growth. In our quest for the development of the South
African industry as a contender on its own, rather than a service
provider for foreign countries. Government has put forward a number
of supports training distribution and exhibition. Numerous South
African films have already been screened and recognized at some
of the most prestigious international film festivals around the
world.
Possibly
the most notable aspect of the past year has been the double-edged
sword of the strong Rand. As foreign countries moved towards the
last expensive filming destinations, South Africa found itself suddenly
less cost effective than before. In global context, we must still
strive to offer production value, professionalism and remain internationally
competitive and economically viable.
Western
cape, Gauteng and Kwa Zulu-natal have opened film offices to accommodate
the growth for the quest of new and diverse locations. It is imperative
that we market our country as a filming destination for uncomplicated,
hospitable service.
It
is with confidence, therefore, that we can embrace the changes and
challenges or 2005. The year ahead will be filled with new possibilities
and refreshing visions, building as ever a stronger and more sustainable
future for our industry.
Once
again thank you to all our advertisers for their continued support.
Barry
Lucas
WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2004
This
is it! The eleventh edition of the Whole Lot Directory. Candace
and I still love what we do and are reminded that this publication
would not be possible without your support and all in the business
of facilitating the film industry. Each year we try to make the
directory more comprehensive and user friendly. We hope that you
are finding our new soft cover easier to use.
The
endeavors of our local industry to produce features are starting
to bear fruit with number of South African stories being shot by
homegrown talent. Cape town is spearheading dreamworld, a R426 million
sound stage complex, which will finally diversify cape town from
location based film destination. This initiative will also bring
about new crew training opportunities and a host of ancillary industries,
which will also flourish from this project.
Cape
Town now boasts two motion picture labs with the refinery coming
on stream with their new front-end processor. Condor has also opened
its doors in Cape Town with all the latest high-end post equipment.
With five rental companies operating we now carry the best camera
support systems the world has to offer. This allows South Africa
to handle any long format feature or commercial that comes our way.
We have seen our currency strengthen over the last year, and in
a global context we must still offer production value and professionalism
to remain competitive.
Johannesburg
and Durban have both opened film offices to accommodate the growth
for the quest of new and diverse locations. We should not take a
parochial view on this, as it is a sign of healthy growth in our
film industry.
Once
again I would like to thank all our advertisers for their support.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2003
Ten
years on…
Our
tenth edition is largely due to the diligence and tenacity of Candace,
and the supporting role I have come to fulfill.
The
past decade of the Whole Lot has only been made possible by continued
support we have received from all of you, our advertisers. Your
trust in our ability to produce what is the definite database directory
for the industry, has always been our continued inspiration.
I
believe that while enduring the local industry's attempt to attract
international features, dramas and documentaries to our shores.
It is equally important to establish a foundation for creating a
solid-slate of more indigenous self-funded films. We need an urgent
accurate skill audit and production shortfall. Training centers
are essential and must be engaged at all levels if we are to substain
the growth of our industry and introduce expertise at integrated
level.
On
the home front are a number of consortiums at present, looking at
world class studio / backlot venues in cape town, this will help
encourage an all year round shooting season, and not only make us
a location. Kwa Zulu-natal has fast tracked their film office and
has embarked on an initiative to attract filmmakers to their amazing
locations. The industry has already established rental and production
facilies from which to operate.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2002
Hello
again
Life
in the United States and the western world changed forever on September
11 2001. The images of the highly coordinated terrorist attacks
on Manhattan and Washington, transmitted within minutes of their
occurrence, to millions around the world, will become a lasting
image in popular culture. The war on terrorism is global and in
the light of bio-terrorism and other repercussions, it would be
premature to predict the ramifications on the South African film
and facility industry.
In
our new global economy, we need to lobby government and business
for tax incentives, similar to those offered in many other countries.
Internationally, Ireland, Australia and the UK have recognized the
considerable advantages of foreseeing a healthy film industry. It
is imperative that the South African government encourages the growth
of our film industry. The truth is that free trade does not necessarily
equate with fair trade when it comes to attracting international
productions.
A
new frontier in production of local content needs to be created.
This will establish a foundation for creating a solid slate of more
indigenous, self-funded films. Feature films are well-crafted, uniquely
South African and popularly accessible need to be looked at as a
way of promoting our industry internationally.
The
dreams we make for ourselves as well as realizing those of others
will, I believe, ensure the continued and vibrant life of the entertainment
industry in South Africa.
It
is also vital that we address training shortfalls, partially in
the areas of production and camera work, if we are to sustain the
growth of our industry. Training centres where skills can be learnt
by film students from all sectors of the population, will contribute
towards a more egalitarian resource pool from which to draw our
future filmakers.
This
ninth year of the Whole Lot directory is the perfect starting point
for getting yourself networked into the southern African entertainment
industry. The Whole Lot remains the premier research tool for adverting
agencies producers and media industry professions. Updated regularly
it has become the obvious choice for those seeking a current source
of knowledge.
The
focus of this years' edition is on the vast and generally diverse
variety of locations available in southern Africa. We hope to share
with you a glimpse of some of the spectacular and varied panoramas
and settings in region and invite you once again to make use of
the abundant recourses South Africa has to offer.

WHOLE
LOT DIRECTORY 2001
The
Whole Lot Database is now in its eighth year of service. One of
the most interesting aspects of our network is the organic affinity
it has adapted. We regularly evaluate the growth, performance and
accuracy of our system, which reflects the cynical change and character
of the industry that we work in at present.
I
believe in having a working database, our true substance also comes
from offering a complete service delivery and an understanding of
environment that we prosper in. For this reason our strategy is
still to continue printing and hard-copy directory. As yet the electronic
media cannot deliver to all our broad-based subscribers and users.
While
endorsing the local industries attempt to attract international
features, dramas and documentaries to our shores. I believe it is
equally to establish a foundation for creating a "solid slate" of
more indigenous self-funded films. We need an urgent accurate skills
audit in order to address and identify our technical and production
shortfalls. Training centres are essential and must be engaged at
grass roots if we are sustain the growth of our industry and introduce
expertise at an integrated level. We now boast a competitive service
delivery with AFM, Filmair, MCC Logical Designs, Media Film Service
and Cinelicht Afrika, all offering the latest rental equipment from
centres within our country.
The
Whole Lot still remains an essential tool for operating in our Southern
African entertainment industry. We invite you to come to South Africa
and enjoy service of our excellent technicians and crew while you
shoot your best picture yet.
Thank
you for our continued support

Hello
again
The
next millennium will bring with it a new global working environment.
We, at The Whole Lot, with this our 7th edition, are going to make
sure that you, our subscriber and advertiser, continue to benefit
from our fully integrated use of technology into the future.
Information
is easy to produce, but to maintain and successfully control it
lies in a full understanding of our industry. The Whole lot, with
its stability, depth of commitment and innovation abilities, ensures
that we have the advantage.
We at the Whole Lot have the capacity to adopt a distance in respect
of merges, acquisitions and privatization. These have and will continue
to bring about significant change. Not many will escape the impact
of what will result. We hope that the final outcome does not undermine
an industry based on visionaries and creative ability.
Africa
continues to undergo transformation, the hope is that it can reconfigure
to create a structure of prosperity, which will grow the skills
of all. This can then introduce expertise within our industry at
an integrated level, which would allow us to create a market to
promote Africa and it's cinema on global level.
We
believe the most challenging times for our industry still lie ahead
in the 21st century. We must take with us the knowledge from the
century we now leave behind, and turn challenges into creative opportunities
as we go forward.
Thank
you for your continued support.
